I might have the best job on the farm!! Shhhh....don't tell anyone else that or they might get ideas. But in all seriousness, my role as the summer farm chef includes some of the most fulfilling work I have ever done!

The crazy thing is, others can say the same thing about their roles here at Polyface! We are all created uniquely; each of us has been gifted with different skills, interests, and passions. On the farm, we talk a lot about how every job is sacred. So do I have the best job on the farm? No, because there is no such thing. However, I might have the best job on the farm for me

6 o'clock in the evening is probably my favorite part of the day! That is when the day's work is more or less completed and the farm crew gathers for our evening meal. Regardless of what went according to plan that day (inside or outside my kitchen realm), a sense of peace and community occurs as we finish out our day by eating together.

I may not be moving cows or pulling chicken shelters, but I am feeding the people who do that work. That is important. That is sacred.

Perhaps you find yourself in a supporting role right now. How do you view it? Do you view it as a reminder that you haven't gotten into "the big leagues"? Or, do you see it for what it is in truth - the only way those in positions of greater influence can produce worthwhile contributions?

Even in a job you love, there are always going to be aspects that are less than enjoyable. But realizing that every action we take in our day-to-day work is important to the overall mission can help to keep our spark of inspiration alive.

Perhaps some of us need to take a good hard look at whether we are investing our time and energy into a role that aligns with our values. Do you feel a sense of calling and purpose in your work? Maybe now is the time to take a leap of faith and begin supporting or doing the work you are truly passionate about.

VIRTUAL TOUR: Egg-laying Chickens

I absolutely love walking the fields at Polyface and seeing the animals living out their natural uniqueness. For over a decade now, one of my favorite yearly rituals has been taking spring walks there—pausing just to listen to the quiet, steady sound of cows grazing. There’s something incredibly grounding about it. I also get a kick out of watching the chickens dart and weave, especially when one finds an earthworm and suddenly turns into a tiny, determined guardian of her prize. And the pigs! ...They’re endlessly entertaining. I could stand there forever just breathing it all in and laughing at how curious and playful they are as they explore their space. I really think everyone should visit Polyface at least once. Seeing it in person makes such a powerful impression. It’s completely different from what most people picture when they think of a typical American farm. That said, I know not everyone gets the chance to go. So I’m especially grateful for the folks who film and share these experiences, making it possible to get a glimpse of that beauty and peace from afar. Take a break and check out this virtual tour of their egg-laying chickens. Blessings, Hannah
